La Photocabine: My Selfie Journal

I first started using the French vintage-style photo booth website, La Photocabine, in November of 2009. I discovered it through a blog and I immediately loved it. This was before Instagram and its faux-vintage filters. I immediately saw the potential of using this virtual photo booth as a visual journal of myself because it was four photos in one (more potential for storytelling) and the photos would take place in front of my computer (where I always am).

"morning, just got dressed and was reading bleubirdvintage.typepad.com she mentioned www.laphotocabine.com so i checked it out. it's so cute and french, i love it. i'm going to take photos with it everyday" [Nov. 24, 2009]
Since then, I have come to La Photocabine whenever I had a cute new hairstyle to show, a holiday to celebrate, a craft I made, a purchase to show off, a new outfit, a new experience... There are been times that I have taken photos almost daily, and also long periods of not using it at all. Sadly, the reason I stopped using it a few years ago was because my Internet/computer was just too slow to even load the site; it was just too frustrating. But in December 2012, my iMac died (RIP) and I got a MacBook Pro, so I decided to try out La Photocabine again, and was very excited to start using it regularly. The fact that I had a laptop meant even more potential for the format, as I could take photos other than sitting at my desk! I was so pleased about this that I began 2013 with the intention of taking daily La Photocabine photos (downloading the iPhone app helped with that), but again, I experienced technical difficulties with the website (stretched/squished camera, which I was able to almost-fix with iGlasses). I didn't keep up with daily photos, but I used it intermittently throughout 2013.

"I just thought I did a pretty good job on a messy bun today." [June 1, 2012]

When I decided to try it out while at my parents house (new location!) for Thanksgiving weekend last year, I found that the website had been updated with more options. There was now a GIF option, background options, and space to write a note! I thought adding a note directly onto the photo was great, because I had been including short captions with each photo when I uploaded them to my Flickr album.

[Oct. 13, 2013]
And, now, just the other day, when I went to La Photocabine to see if the camera was still messed up, Firefox froze. (Boo!) And when I re-opened Firefox, it had updated. I didn't like all the changes, so I tried other browsers. I almost settled with Chrome because La Photocabine worked perfectly (Yay!) but went back to Firefox (a bunch of little reasons). However, La Photocabine still doesn't work properly in Firefox (instead of stretched, it includes the entire widescreen inside of the square), so I decided to keep Chrome handy just for La Photocabine.

I don't want to turn this into a 'think piece' on selfie culture, but I do want to address why I like to take photos of myself. A big reason is; I like the way I look! I've always been visually creative above all else, which is why I started cultivating my own strange fashion sense as young as 11 years old. My body is my canvas, so I dye my hair and I do my make-up and I pick out my outfits to reflect who I am. Because I've always put thought into my look, capturing my looks over the years has been important, both as instant gratification (seeing myself look good in a photo) and for longevity (I can track where I was in my life by tracking what color/length my hair was or what style I was rocking). Capturing myself, my life, from when I was 13 with my first camcorder/digital camera, to Photo Booth on my iMac, to setting up photoshoots with backdrops and lighting, selfies on Instagram and La Photocabine, has been an artistic hobby for me, as well as a fun way of journalling my life.

"rushing off to class. just wanted to take a picture of my curly hair before it flattened.
after class i'll make my BVBN video." [Feb. 1, 2010]
So, I'm going to keep taking shameless selfies for Instagram, dressing up and having a photo shoot with myself, and capturing little and big moments with La Photocabine because I'd rather have a million photos of myself, and the rest of my life, to look back on when I'm a hundred years old, than a bunch of hand-written diaries, or doodles in a sketchbook. We all have our ways of capturing and remembering the times of our lives. I guess selfies is mine.

Flashback Friday // La Photo Cabine

Once I discovered the cool website La Photo Cabine (in Fall '09) that lets you take old fashioned photo booth photos, I started using it almost everyday to, well, let's face it: be a little vain, but also as a sort of photo journal of my life.

I guess I forgot about it and/or lost interest in it at some point. It's been over a year since I was regularly taking photos with it. But, I'm back at it, trying to remember to take photos everyday. Rather than post them on my blog (like I used to) I've put them into a Flickr photo set where they can all be seen in order and write a short description to go along with them. You may have noticed the Flickr widget in my side column where you can see the latest photo, as well. So, if you're interested in my face, or like me, miss my long hair and want to reminisce with photos of it, take a look at the photo set and keep an eye on the widget for glimpses of what I'm up to, or just look like day-to-day.

amuse bouche

I saw photos like that on weheartit.com and I just had to do it myself. iPhones are handy like that. Being little screens, I mean. Don't even get me started on the new iPhone 4. I'm trying not to read anything about it because it'll just make me totally jealous and make my iPhone 3GS looks like poop in comparison.

one-eyed monster

I look like some weird superhero villain. I'm trying to pop the lenses out of the Dollarama sunglasses I bought, so I can wrap them in yarn. However, I'm having some difficulty. The first pair I got a while ago popped out really easily. These are ridiculously difficult and ouchy on my hands. I've only managed to get one lense out of two pairs. I'm going to keep trying...

feathers

I stuck some feathers in a headband and voila. I think it might look cool for photos but I don't think I'll walk around with feathers sticking out of my head. Or a headband, for that matter. They never seem to look good on me, plus I like my hair to be low maintenance. Nothing stuck in it that has to be adjusted.

na-na-na-na na-na-na-na batman

It's batman week for me and my blog! I've gotten all the movies and am going to watch them all this week. I've also got Batman themed blog posts for everyday this week. I don't know why, but I just decided a while ago that I really wanted to see all the Batman movies. So, now I'm in full Batman mode. I hope you enjoy my Batman week!

runaway girls t-shirt

As you saw in my last post, I made my Runaway Girls t-shirt on the weekend. Today I did a video & photo shoot to show it off and add to my video.

I've been drinking energy drinks ever since we had a couple at the fair Saturday night. Apparently it doesn't take much to get addicted to caffeine. I feel like I can't get up without it now. I've tried Full Throttle Blue Demon and Monster. They taste good compared to nasty energy drinks I've tried before like Redbull. But, of course, they don't even come close to the perfection that is TaB Energy.

What energy drinks do you like?

i feel like i'm cheating on tab energy

I had a great weekend hanging out at my parents' house in the country, reading my 15-in-1 Oz book (I'm now on the fourth). I made a Runaway Girls t-shirt, which is our first 'mission', helped out at the church bake sale/plant sale/car wash, and went to the fair with Kim & Monica. There will be a full photo-packed post once I get myself organized. Also stay tuned for my 'Mission: Runaway Girls T-Shirt' video and a video of fun at the fair. Actually, I think I have more footage of Kim & I dancing to disco in the car driving to the fair than of the actual fair.

all that's missing is the curlers

I am secretly an old lady. I'm sure you're shocked. The last one's a little bit scary. I always think I look like the chick from The Grudge whenever I have a face mask on. Well, it's dry now. I can't move my face. Time to go wash it off.

pinkberry!

I filmed my Runaway Girls video today and Pinkberry made a little cameo. I love her, but I don't play with her as much as I used to, so I took some pictures with her.

Today I went to Chapters & Michaels to hand out my resumé only to have them tell me that I have to apply online. So, later, I found out online that that Chapters isn't hiring and I did the longest application and questionnaire of all time for Michaels. Seriously, over 200 questions. Those ones where they give a statement and you choose strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree. Geez. All that and all it said was they would contact me if they were interested. I'm sure they won't be with my lack of job experience.

So, back to Michaels. I bought some rhinestones to decorate glasses. $5 for a pack of 160. I bought three. I don't know if that will even be enough for one pair. I swear, once upon a time I bought a pack of rhinestones from Dollarama. Which means they were a dollar. And it was way more than one of the packs from Michaels. Those frames are going to have to be expensive. I really hope someone buys them! I also bought small silver round beads to decorate glasses (not sure how they'll look), two candles; vanilla cupcake and ocean breeze and a pretty container.

Right now I'm baking chocolate cupcakes because I'm out of food (grocery shopping tomorrow) and I have chocolate cravings!

ivegan cheezburger!
Today I watched Betty White on SNL, went grocery shopping, had a cheezburger, worked on blue/green yarn glasses, did some organizing of ideas on the computer, ripped out magazine pictures for my closet door windows (but now I'm thinking newspaper might also look cool and more neutral for photo backgrounds), had Degrassi Junior High on the whole day, worked on blog posts, did the dishes, started some disco glasses, had a shower, worked on a Runaway Girls idea (I'm excited if we can make it happen), and now I'm going to attempt to get into bed around midnight...

La Photo Cabine of the Day

I love these frames! Omgzzzzzzz!

I bought some sunglasses from Dollarama today to see what I could do with them. As in, pop the lenses out and do yarn frames or keep the lenses in and decorate another way. I thought these were pretty awesome sunglasses for a dollar, but when I popped the lenses out I saw how freaking cute they really are! I love weird glasses! As I mentioned before, I have a face for glasses, so I love wearing any type of frames. And I've recently decided that because of this I need to start collecting all sorts of different frames. So, I'm keeping these for myself just in case I can't get another pair from Dollarama to decorate (I'm thinking yarn would be cutest) but I am definitely making another trip to Dollarama soon for lots more cheap sunnies! Dollarama definitely let me down by not having packs of small rhinestones (lots of kits with multiple sizes, but I just need the small size) but the discovery of these frames alone makes up for it.

I love you forever, Dollarama!

La Photo Cabine of the Day

I didn't have anything to show off today, so I just made faces. My tongue is blue from eating sour candies left over from the Dora piñata massacre.

I spent today organizing my front closet which is basically storage. I must be really good at compacting because I now have three empty boxes, but I didn't throw that much away. Organizing makes me feel soooo good. I'm also in the midst of changing all of the stuff on my walls. I can't decide between just putting tons of stuff up to fill them up, or to be more selective and only put up the best stuff and keep themes together. Right now I have one wall of just my art.
I could keep writing about how I'm planning on organizing everything in my apartment, but I know that that is only exciting to me.
I'm going to try to get into bed before 1am tonight because my parents are coming to pick me up "early" tomorrow morning. I thought it'd be nice to go visit them for the weekend since Sunday is Mother's Day. Hopefully while I'm there I can go into town for some shopping (cheap craft supplies from Dollarama!) and get my mom some flowers and/or a gift. Oh, that reminds me I have to make her card tonight. So maybe bed at 1:30am...

La Photo Cabine of the Day

I was going to do it four times with my four different glasses (and photoshop one of each together) to show how I look good in any kind of glasses frames, but I decided I liked all of these pics and photoshopping defeats the purpose of this crazy online french photo booth.
But seriously, I challenge you to find a pair of glasses or sunnies that do not look good on me. I just have a face for glasses. I always say it's a shame I'm the only one in my family (and most of my extended family) that doesn't need glasses. And then my friends who have to wear glasses say "Don't you dare wish that! Having to wear glasses sucks! You are so lucky you can see perfectly without help!" So, I just content myself with wearing "fake" glasses.
These are my Granny/Harry Potter (I even have a forehead scar to match his) glasses. I mean, seriously unflattering glasses on anyone else, but on me they manage to look cute. I don't mean to be conceited. It's just a fact. It's just my face.
I got these from an optometrist. I always loved going to this guy's shop because it was crazy awesome inside and also I love trying on frames. The uglier the better. I tried these on and we were all laughing at them and he said "You know what? I've had those forever, no one is ever going to buy them. You can have them." Eighty dollar frames for free, baby.

Amazingly ugly glasses and a great memory.

Oh, I feel I should explain the "La Photo Cabine of the Day" thing. Ever since I discovered La Photo Cabine, I've tried taking a set of photos with it everyday. I spend a lot of time at my computer every day, so taking a few snapshots with my iSight everyday will probably make a pretty accurate account of how I look/what I do every day. I haven't been using La Photo Cabine a lot lately, but I'm going to start making an effort to do one everyday. And post it here for you to see. Along with a little description of the photos and what I'm doing that day. It's an easy and interesting way to keep a sort of photo journal for myself. Definitely easier and more fun than using my digital camera or just Photo Booth to take a photo of myself everyday.

Anger, Anger, Curse Words, Anger, Pout

Allow me to vent...

I am a big ball of fury right now. I got to my class this morning at 8am (start of class) according to my phone clock, but I guess I was a few minutes late according to the teacher because class had already started and the teacher was doing the demo (demonstration of a recipe at his workstation at the front of the class, everyone stands close to watch). This new teacher keeps the door locked, so I had to knock on the door and got a girl's attention and pointed like "hey, open the door for me?" I saw her tell the teacher someone was at the door and she made like she was going to come to the door but I guess he said not to, so she gave me a look like "sorry".

So I thought, fine, I get that. Teachers don't like students being late and like to make them wait outside rather than disturb the class. However, it didn't really seem fair to me, or to the members of my group, that I should not be allowed to watch the demo, so I wouldn't know what we were doing that day. Which would be really annoying to my group members who would have to explain/help me all class.

The longer I stood there, the angrier I got. Until finally I looked at my phone and it was 8:15 and he was still doing the demo (that's a long demo) so I thought; if he doesn't want me to learn and to be in his fucking class, then I won't be in his fucking class. So I left.

I realize that it was totally immature and irresponsible to do that, but I was fucking pissed. Anyone who has been pissed off can understand that when you're angry, you're not exactly rational. It was especially stupid of me because I was already stupid yesterday and skipped that class. So even though I don't like this class, I actually wanted to go today because I felt guilty about skipping yesterday. I didn't (still don't) want to be late or miss any more classes because I can only miss so many, and I need to make myself do things I need to do, even if I don't like it. Cuz that's being mature and responsible.

So I'm pissed at the stupid French teacher and at myself. But mostly him.

Whenever I'm angry about something like that it makes me want to do things like "ya, well i'll show you!" So today I'm going to think "I'll show you stupid French bastard! I don't need your fucking baking class! I'm not going to be a stupid baker! I'm going to be an artist! So I will spend the day painting, sewing, designing, writing, making a video, planning an artists group, writing a script, taking photos, and creating things. And when all that makes me rich, famous and successful you can SUCK MY BIG COCK, YOU FRENCH PASTRY FUCK!"

Ahh... I feel better now. I'm off to do some creative work.

xoxo
